What is earwax?

Ear wax, also known as cerumen, is a yellowish, waxy substance produced by the ceruminous glands in the ear canal. The primary function of ear wax is to protect the ear canal by trapping dust, debris, and other particles, preventing them from reaching and potentially damaging the eardrum. Therefore, ear wax is completely natural and healthy to have some present in the ear canal.

When does earwax become a problem?

Ear wax typically dries up and falls out of the ear naturally, assisted by jaw movements such as chewing or talking. In some cases, the wax may accumulate and become impacted, leading to a blockage in the ear canal.

This can cause symptoms such as:

  • Hearing loss

  • Tinnitus (ringing in the ears)

  • Dizziness

  • Fullness

  • Discomfort or pain

It's important NOT to insert objects like cotton buds into the ear canal to clean ear wax, as this can push the wax further down and potentially cause injury or further impaction. Instead, clean the outer ear only.

If there are concerns about excessive ear wax or impaction, it's recommended to consult with a healthcare professional who can safely assess and address the issue.

What is microsuction?

A small suction device, attached to a low-pressure vacuum, is used to gently remove the ear wax. The suction device is equipped with a thin, sterile tip that is inserted into the ear canal. The procedure is performed under direct vision using magnification. This allows a clear view of the ear canal and ensures precise and controlled wax removal.

What is irrigation?

An electrically powered pump is used to deliver a controlled flow of warm water into the ear canal. The continuous flow of water helps to dislodge and flush out the softened earwax from the ear canal. Using an electrical pump for ear irrigation allows for a more controlled and regulated flow of water unlike traditional manual syringes. This can be particularly beneficial for those with varying levels of sensitivity or very soft wax often seen with overuse of ear drops.

FAQS

FAQs

How much does it cost to have ear wax removal?

The cost of microsuction or irrigation is £65 for one or both ears. Please note if there is no wax present in the initial examination a fee of £20 will apply.

Should I use olive oil drops prior to appointment?

Microsuction does not require lengthy use of drops. We recommend using olive oil drops 2 days prior to your appointment and 7 days if Irrigation is preferred. We recommend using Earol Olive oil spray which is available to buy over the counter in most pharmacies. This will facilitate the procedure for your comfort.

Is Microsuction appropriate for me, I have had surgery on my ears in the past?

Microsuction has several advantages over other methods, as it offers better visibility and control, reduces the risk of injury to the ear canal, and is suitable for individuals with a history of ear surgery or ear perforations.

How do I know if I have wax?

If you have difficulty hearing, tinnitus, or a sensation of fullness or discomfort in the ear, you should see a qualified healthcare professional to examine your ears.

Does the procedure hurt?

Not usually, although it can be noisy. The skin inside the ear canal can be sensitive so it is important to stay still during the procedure.

How long does the procedure take to complete?

Following initial examination, the procedure can last up to 20 minutes depending on level of wax and position. If we are unable to remove the wax in one session, we will book you in for a free follow up.

How do I make payments?

Payments can be made via cash or card in person.

Do you see children?

If you’re booking for someone 16 or younger please contact by telephone for a discussion about symptoms and what the procedure entails to determine if it is suitable before booking.
